Myopia Management

Myopia is more likely to get worse if it starts at an early age. At Hynes Optometrists, we closely monitor our patients for this deterioration.

What is Myopia?

Myopia (short-sightedness) usually starts in childhood and requires spectacles or contact lenses to see clearly. It affects approximately 30% of the world’s population and its prevalence has been forecast to affect about 50% of the world’s population by 2050 1. Myopia is more likely to get worse if it starts at an early age. At Hynes Optometrists, we closely monitor our patients for this deterioration.

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to be myopic, this vision simulator will help:

It is most commonly the growth in the length of the eye that causes myopia.

We can now reduce the rate a child becomes more myopic with the following management options:

  • Soft Contact Lenses 2-4
  • Overnight Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses 6,7
  • Spectacle lenses 5

These options have shown to reduce eye length growth by about 50% over 2-3 years 2-7.

Soft Contact Lenses

Generally, our first choice would be a soft daily disposable contact lens. We can fit contact lenses to children as young as 7. Follow this link for more information on soft daily disposable myopia management contact lenses:

Ortho-K Lenses

For those that have dry eyes, are into water sports or who do not like to wear any lenses during the day, we usually recommend Ortho-K lenses. These correct the myopia while you sleep. Simply sleep in the lenses, remove them in the morning and wake up to clear sharp natural vision. Ortho-K lenses can correct up to -4.00D of myopia and can also correct astigmatism (a blur caused by the eye being shaped more like a rugby ball than a football). The suitability of these lenses is dependent on the curvature of the eye which we will need to measure before recommending them. Follow this link for more information on Ortho-K lenses:

Spectacle Lenses

For those who feel they are not ready for contact lenses we would recommend myopia management spectacle lenses. Follow this link for more information on myopia management spectacle lenses:
