Contact Lens Profile

The Benefits of Contact Lenses

What are the benefits of contact lenses over spectacles?

  • Better all round vision
  • More stable vision as the eye looks through the centre of the lens
  • Can be worn safely during most sports
  • Not affected by rain or changes in temperature
  • Incidence of breakage is low
  • Improved cosmesis especially for higher prescriptions
  • Can correct most common eyesight defects; short-sight, long-sight, astigmatism and even presbyopia
  • Boosts confidence and self-esteem especially in teenagers

Soft lenses

These are the most popular lens type prescribed. They are thin, flexible and moist, and initial comfort is excellent. With the exception of daily disposable lenses, they need to be cleaned and disinfected every day.

  • Soft lenses are suitable for patients with myopia (shortsightedness), hyperopia (longsightedness) and astigmatism.
  • 1 day lenses – soft, flexible and very comfortable to wear. No cleaning solutions required as the lenses are discarded after use. Great for full-time or part-time use.
  • Two weekly and monthly lenses are primarily made from the new material silicone hydrogel which allows even more oxygen to reach the eye. These lenses need to be cleaned and disinfected every day. They are an excellent choice for people who wear their lenses all day every day.
  • Multifocal lenses are designed for people who need to have both distance and reading vision corrected.
  • Coloured lenses are available with no power as well as with a prescription. They enhance light eyes with a tint, or change the colour with an opaque lens to give a subtle or dramatic change of eye colour.

Rigid Gas Permeable

Advances in lens materials now allow more oxygen to reach the front of the eye through a gas permeable lens. These lenses are generally small, hard to the touch and need an initial period of adaptation. They have a low risk of infection, can be made up to almost any prescription and are replaced annually depending on the lens material and individual patient requirements.

Ortho-K

Orthokeratology or Ortho-k is a contact lens that gently re-shapes the front of your eye (the cornea) while you sleep. Upon removing your lenses in the morning, the precise change in shape allows you to see clearly without the need of glasses or contact lenses for the rest of the day.

The Ortho-K lens we mostly use is EyeDream.

Ortho-K lenses such as EyeDream have also been shown to slow myopia progression in many studies and over many years.

So how does EyeDream work?

The cornea (the clear part at the front of your eye) plays a key part in achieving good vision. During sleep, EyeDream lenses use the pressure of your closed eyelids to gently reshape the cornea. When the lenses are removed, the slight flattening that EyeDream creates – less than the width of a human hair – is enough to give you crisp, clear unaided vision all day.

1. Before EyeDream

The front of the eye, the cornea, plays a key role in the quality of your vision.

2. Overnight

Closed eyelids exert gentle pressure on the EyeDream lenses which reshape the cornea.

3. Gentle reshaping

EyeDream flattens the cornea by less than the width of a human hair, correcting vision.

4. All day vision

Remove the lenses in the morning and enjoy crisp, unaided vision all day.

EyeDream is perfect for shortsighted people who want ..

Freedom from specs and lenses.

An alternative to laser surgery.

Vision correction for dry eyes.

Vision correction for sport.

Myopia Management - Soft Contact Lenses

Research has shown that several types of intervention can help reduce myopia progression. In the UK these include Ortho-K contact lenses, spectacles and soft myopia management contact lenses.

Generally, our first choice of interventions would be a soft myopia management daily disposable contact lens. We can fit contact lenses to children as young as 7.
